The Government has decided that the Board of Trade award increasing the living wage by 17s a week shall apply to the whole State public service, on salaries up to £525 per annum. STRIKES IN SYDNEY. SYDNEY, Deo. 5. The Labour Council has decided to support the brewers’ strike, and also the letterpress machinists, who have given 14 days’ notice of a strike unless increased wages are granted.—Aus.N.Z. Cable Assn. BREAK-UP OF DROUGHT. (Received Dec. 6, 10.20 a.m.) SYDNEY, Dee. 6. Good falls of rain have been experienced in the fax west. DOMESTIC SERVICE. (Received Dec. 6, 10.20 a.m.) SYDNEY, Dec. 6. A meeting of women formed an organisation demanding better conditions for domestic servants. They claim a fiftysix hours week and a minimum wage of 20s a week, good accommodation, and the abolition of the term “domestic servant” in favour of- “household assistant.” CONSTITUTION AMENDMENT. The Legislative Council rejected the Constitution Amendment Bill, which passed the Lower House and provided household suffrage as the franchise for the Council and the extension of the life of the present Parliament. VICTORIAN LICENSING BILL. (Received Dec. 6, 10.20 a.m.) MELBOURNE, Deo. 6. The Assembly carried an amendment to the Licensing Bill allowing hotelkeepers to sell tea, coffee, cocoa and milk during prohibited hours. VICTORIAN HEALTH BILL. (Received Dec. 6, 10.20 a.m.) MELBOURNE, Dec. 6. ~ A new clause was added to the Health Bill empowering the employment of doctors as government or municipal officers, their duties to embrace attendance on persons entitled to it under any friendly society which entered into an agreement with the Minister of Health or a municipality. GAS WORKERS’ STRIKE. (Received Dec. 6, 10.20 a.m.) MELBOURNE, Dee. 6. Gas workers at Melbourne, Ballarat, Bendigo and Geelong have struck, demanding increased wages.
