BOROUGH BY-ELECTION.

ME. A. B. SYKES RETURNED. LAEGE MAJORITY. The voting on Wednesday did not betoken any unusual interest in the byelection held to till the seat on the Borough Council rendered vacant by the resignation of Mr. Jas. Clarke before he contested the mayoralty. It was not until the latter part Sf the afternoon that voters began to proceed to the booths in any numbers, but when the count was made it . was found that the poll was a trifle lighter than that for the mayoralty three weeks ago, the totals for the two occasions being 1615 and 1628. Mr. A. E. Sykes defeated Mr. AV. H. Fitzpatrick, Labour candidate, for the position on the council by a two to one majority. The arrangements of the returning officer (Mr. E. Day) again proved to be excellent. The result of the poll was announced from the principal booth shortly before 8 o’clock, details being as follow;

1063 535 Majority for Sykes, 533. Informal, 12.

The returning officer intimated to a small crowd that had assembled that Hr. Sykes was not present. Mr. W- Nash announced that Mr. Fitzpatrick was absent at the Watersiders’ Conference at" Napier, and that he wished to return thanks to those who had voted for Mr. Fitzpatrick. He was pleased to see that since the last poll the Labour voto had increased m some cases by 100 per cent. Last time Labour only polled 1 at Frankleigh Park; now they had 2. \
