Viscount Grey has been appointed temporary British Ambassador to the United States.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.

Tho Commissioner of Police, Mr. J. O’lJonovan, this week paid visit of inspection to New Plymouth and the surrounding stations. Sir Herbert Ames, a Canadian, has been appointed financial director on the permanent secretariat of the League of Nations, with headquarters at Geneva.

An amalgamation has been arranged as from September 1 of the legal businesses of Messrs G ovett and Quilliam and Mr. D. Hntcheu. The new firm will be known as “Govett, Quilliam, and Hntchen.” A 'Wellington press message states that Sergeant C. W. Lopdell was presented last night with a gold watch and chain and an inscribed medal from all the N.C.O.’s and men of the uniform branch throughout New Zealand in recognition of his sendees on behalf of the uniform men at the recent inquiry in connection with the police force.

The following Taranaki men are returning by the Athonic, due to arrive on September 1: Lieut. H. L. Warner (Opunake), Privates. CK Banks (New Plymouth). S. R. Cole (New Plymouth), W. O. Hogg (Waitara), W. Mitchell \ .uiponga), E. J. Rielly (New Plymouth), A. Shepherd (New Plymouth), P. C. Short (Lowgarth), A. M. Stimpson (Inglewood), Lieut. D. G. ■Dodson, R.F.A. (Hawern), and Lieut. E. Kindberg, R.F.C. (New Plymouth) are returning via, Australia in the Fredencksruho and the. Prince Ludwig. Mr. C. H. Croker, barrister and solicitor, has entered; into partnership with Mr. A. H. Johnstone, of New Plymouth, and tile practice hitherto carried on by Mr. Johnstone will be continued under the style of Johnstone and Croker. Mr. Croker is an ex-Otago boy, and received his legal training in the office of Messrs. Hosking and Cook, of Dunedin. Subsequently to his admission as a. solicitor he joined the late Lieut.-Colonel Malone at Stratford, where he remained for about two years, leaving Stratford about six years ago to commence practice on his own account at Hastings. Mr. Croker gave up his practice at Hastings in 1916 and went to the front with the N.Z.E.F., returning to New Zealand in May last. Mr. C. A. Wilkinson, M.P.. announced at the meeting of the Education Board on Wednesday that he was resigning from membership of the board because it was almost impossible for him to attend regularly at the meetings. He apologised for irregularity of attendance during the past six months, the reason having been the calls of Ins Parliamentary duties. He thought he would bo justified in explaining that when he originally consented to stand His main motive was to help in consolidating and establishing under the Taranaki Board the portion of the district that had then been recently taken over from tho Wanganui Education Board. That part of the district was now thoroughly satisfied with the administration of tho Taranaki Education Board, he thought. In accepting Mr. Wilkinson’s resignation, the chairman and members of the board spoke in very appreciative terms of the valuable service ha had given as a member of the board,
