TARANAKI COUNTY COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING. The Taranaki County Council met at New Plymouth to-rlay. Those, present were; Councillors J. H. Cohnett, (chairman), A. Iff. Laurence, J. B. Simpson, J. Wooldridge, C. Andrews, S. Vickers, A. Morton. G. Capper and J. Andrews. Tlio chairman extended a welcome to Councillor Vickers, who was attending the first meeting since his appointment. CHAIRAIAN’S REPORT. The chairman submitted a report outlining the proceedings at the conference hold at Eltham, and also dealing with the representations made to tho New Plymouth Borough Council regarding toll-gates. In addition the chairman reported that J. Alackie had been given full control of all labour connected with the crushing plant, and also lorry drivers. The reports for July show that Driver Philpoft had devoted the whole of his time to Devon Road..rolling and scarifying 111 chains (if road. In the Aioa. Riding '.Foreman Laurence reported having received 1.03 yards of metal trmn Aiaunganm pit. 93 yard;; being lor his length and eight for Foreman Alallon's. Foreman .Mailou slated that owing to wet weather and heavy motor 1 raffle the Alonnlain Road had been a heavy problem; there was only 100 yards authorised for this road, whereas it would require ,3 ,; 0 yard.-. Foreman Spencer said the Carrington Road in the borough had broken up rather badly and required 20 yards to repair it. In rite ANaitara Riding, Foreman J. Holme, reported that during the month he had received IKSS yards of metal from the crusher | for the Devon Road, and work should | be completed on Saturday, weather perj milting. He required tho roller to stay behind for a day or two to roll the metal down. Foreman Proud said Ids roads were very bad, and, he would like assistance to put them right. Foreman Harvey had been patching Aiountain, Alanutahi, Richmond and Corbett Roads. In the Omata Riding, Foreman Seamark said the side roads were rut- ; ting up badly, and he required 20 yards i of metal on Lower Barrett Rond ami ' 12 yards on the cheese factory road. Steel Bridge, Sentry Hill: During tho month a dray crashed : into the fencing on tho approaches and smashed a portion of the fencing, which I have repaired. Saunders-Carrington Road Bridges; All the boxing has been stripped from these bridges and both j are now completed with the exception j of the earth work, which is now proceeding. During tho month the Ford truck delivered live tons of chaff from AVnihi I to tho county stables at Fitzroy. Fore- \ man Alallon’s house is proceeding satis- ! factorily, and will bo completed in about a fortnight, CORRESPONDENCE. ■ fames Draper, Brixton, asked permission to take his threshing-plant on Die roads in order lo finish ceveral jobs which he had not been able io proceed with previously owing to the lateness of the season and continued had weather.—The matter was left in the hands ol the chairman to deal with. No action was taken in response to a request to join the. Taranaki Employers’ Association. Air. S. G. Smith. ALP., forwarded a- letter from the Minister of Public AVorks intimating that the request for an increase (u £201) of the amount on the Estimates for metalling Ngamotn Road would receive consideration when the Estimates were being prepared. The, council agreed to take steps to close a. disused portion of tho old Albert Rond, in response, to a request from the New Plymouth Borough Council, provided the latter horn the expense. The Borough Council desired to acquire the laud in connection with their hydroelectric extension work. Tho provincial secretary to the Farmers’ Union notified that the Taranaki executive had passed a resolution supporting the protest made by other public bodies against the proposed wheel tax. The council adjourned for lunch.
