AUSTRALIAN DEFENCE.
NEED FOR NAVAL BASES,

Lord Jollicoe, replying to a welcome at Gladstone, said that Australia meant real business in preparing to defend her shores by the establishment of naval bases. Ho hoped that sca-powor which was absolutely vital for the future of Australia would he generally recognised. Australia offered temptations to neighbours, and, unless human nature altered, people would want to como over and take this glorious country. It would bo necessary to have a strong navy, backed by the British Fleet, to stop them.
