The Rev. J. Reed Glasso-n has resigned the pastorate of the Terrace Congregational Church, Wellington, after 35 years’ service.

He served with the Royal Scots Greys in the charge of the Heavy Brigade at Balaclava and was also at Inkermann and the siege of Sebastapool. He was decorated in the field for distinguished conduct and also held the Crimean, medal with three clasps and. the Turkish medal. i

The death occurred at Wellington on Wednesday last of Mr. Frederick Peter Simson,-at'the’ age of 77 years. He was ’ bom at Melbourne and educated in Europe, afterwards returning to Australia. He came over to New Zealand with a volunteer- force raised there during' the Maori wars and served in Taranaki under Major Atkinson. He married Miss M'Alpin, daughter of Captain M'Alpin, whose wife was Rawinia,- a famous chieftainess of the Taranaki tribe. For several years after the Maori troubles he resided in Taranaki, and for some time had the Rahotu Hotel, later going to the Wellington district. Private information was received in New Plymouth on Saturday of the death at the Hutt on, Friday night of Mr. William Stuart, who was for many years a resident of this town. Mr. Stuart came out to New Zealand from Scotland about '6O years ago in the ship “Jura,” settling first at Dunedin. Five years later he went to Invercargill, where he practised’ as a -barrister and solicitor for a time until he joined- the Provincial Government service, remaining until Provincial Governments were abolished. He then went into partnership with Mr. Janies Harvey, and continued to practise, the law for a time, subsequently .joining the General 'Government service in the Land, Transfer, and Deeds Department. About 1881 he was transferred to Blenheim, where, however, he remained only- a short period, coming to New Plymouth in January, 1832. He succeeded the late Mr. C. E. Rawson as stipendiary magistrate here and about the end of 1896 he was transferred to the charge of the head office of the Land Transfer Department at Wellington, remaining there until ho retired some years, ago, since when ho has lived in retirement at Lower Hutt. For some time past his health has been very indifferent, confining him to his house, and he passed away, as already stated, on Friday night-in his eighty-sixth year,, having three daughters,, Mrs. J. .Rollo, of Now Plymouth; Mrs. Mnloolmson, of Lower Hiitt; and Mis. N. Haire, of Napier. His only son, Mr. R. D. Stuart;’ died at New Plymouth nearly five'years ago. Mr. Stuart was a man of very highcharacter and principles raid was held in the. highest respect of all who 1 knew him. He was a sound lawyer, and when he occupied the Bench ■ in New Plymouth his judgments were always verv carefully considered, earning him the reputation of being a just judge above aU'things: Of a quiet and reserved disposition, he was a particularly well-informed man of broad tolerant views, whose intimacy ijas greatly valued by those privileged" to enjoy‘if.
