N.Z. JERSEY BREEDERS’ ASSOCIATION.

ENTERTAINING THE DELEGATES. The New Plymouth branch of tho Now Zealand Jersey Cattlo Breeders’ Association entertained tho delegates attending tho annual meeting held on Thursday at a smoko concert in tho side rnoin of the .Masonic Hall. The seating accommodation proved inadequate for the large number who attended, but this condition was not the fault of the local branch, as many delegates omitted to reply to tho invitation in time, for tho engagement of a. larger room. After ample justice had been done to an excellent supper, prepared by Messrs. May and Arrowsmith, the following toast list was honoured, the chair being occupied by Mr. E. Griffiths;—

“The Array, Navy and Auxiliary Forces,” coupled with the names of Colonel Weston and Mr. H. hopper; “Now Zealand Jersey Cattle Brooders’ Association” (Messrs. 15. Griffiths and C. Uerriiner). In proposing the toast Air. Griffiths said that he felt sure that the visitors would be impressed with the large number of Jersey breeders and owners in Taranaki. Alany of them wore at it when butter-fat was at its lowest price tind stuck to it until it reached its highest point. In tact many other breeds went giving way to the Jersey. The branches of the association throughout the Dominion were doing excellent work in improving the type and conditions, and lie was pleased to note that a project was afoot to award valuable prizes for yearlings and perhaps two-year-olds. Referring to the Stratford branch, ho was glad to see that they were making such excellent progress—indeed, they were very much alive. Testing was of the greatest importance, and more and more should be done in that direction. Those who have tested should test even more heavily and those who had not yot started should commence now. The question of importing tho best bulls possible to obtain had been brought up at the annual meeting, and was one which deserved .serious consideration and support. It would pay handsomely for live or six breeders to combine and import one. Thoso vlio did so would be doing the best thing for the association, as he will he the one who will breed the best.

Replying to the toast Mr. Clarke (Waikato) said that it always afforded him pleasure to come to Taranaki, as the discussion at the meetings of the association always proved interesting and instructive, and must ultimately do a lot of good. Unfortunately the same enthusiasm as that existing in Taranaki was not so pronounced amongst other branches. The breed of Jerseys bad improved considerably during the last four years and would continue to do so in the future. The Jerseys were now- coming into their own. “Kindred Societies” was proposed by Air. Stanley Shaw, who said that bo agreed with the president in remarking that a very profitable time had been spent at the meeting, and long and lasting good to Jersey breeders must r-esult from the discussion.— AI cssrs. Clarke and Linnell replied.

“Tho Visitors” was proposed by Mr. Dysons, who said that it was highly gratifying to sec so many visitors present, especially as there were so many new faces amongst them. The meetings of tho association were proving of immense benefit to Jersey breeders, for they afforded them an opportunity of studying the climate, soil and other conditions of the towns they visited, and to learn the experience of Jersey breeders.—Messrs. Hill and Watson replied. ‘‘The Secretary” was proposed by Mr. Haglc, who eulogised the work of Mr. Tapp, the association’s secretary. • —Mr. Tapp briefly returned thanks. During the evening songs and recitations were contributed by Messrs: Norman Day. Linnell, Howlott, Hartman, and H. Hill, adding in no small degree to tho very enjoyable evening’s entertainment.

On Sunday the visitors will be taken for a trip to the mountain.
