Many consider Yolo was lucky in being awarded first place in the Raukawa Cup. Young Rayncr, who rode Battle Song, considers that gelding won by nearly a neck. Despite the fact that Peneton got beaten in a race for hunters at Ellorslio, his owner essayed to win the Gisborne Steeplechase with tho son of Penury. The best he could do was to run second to Diavolo. The bay may improve on this performance before long, as ho is a useful sort. 'ilio size of the jumps at Ellerslio was a source of annoyance to Pavaou, and the son of King Rufus may yet make amends for his Ellerslio failures, which were very costly to his connections. \

White Blaze ran great races at Ellerslie. On the first day tho grey led nlost of the way, while cm tho second day Morris was in all the trouble that ivus going, and even then Gray had to ride Parisian Diamond with all his skill to stall Campire’s son off. On the last day tho gelding was hopelessly loft.

Tho success of Madam Ristori last week was in ft measure duo to Gray, who got tho hay mare away from tho tapes m a wonderful manner. I may hero state that tho rider mentioned took a risk in getting across to the rails when ho did.

A well known Hunterville sportsman backed tho Cynic—Master Lupin “double” for £2600. This individual, who is a good judge, had a groat win over tho meeting, and altogether must have won fully £4OOO. Kauri King looked nice and mellow at Ellerslie and ran an excellent race on tho concluding day. He will bo handy season at tho southern fixtures.

A prominent Hawke’s Bay horseman informed the writer that Bon Revo is palpably backward in condition at present. This will be good news to some of the owners who intend opposing Boniform’s son, as on the handicap he Was literally “fired” into tho race, when wo consider the weakness of tho field. 4

Pretty Bobby, who paid a surprisingly good price on tho second day at Otaki, is a useful gelding that will win good races next season. This sou of iVtaniapoto is from a half-sister to Helen Portland (dam of Bonny Helen) and only cost somewhere about £4O. A yearling full brother to Acre was sold lit Randwick recently for 725 guineas. Mr. Duncan paid 300 guineas for Aero and must ■ be well on the right side of the lodger over the Linacre colt. ! The form of Biplane on the. Australian tracks is much below his throe-year-old form, and many of the best judges say tho best has been seen of the black colt. Tho form of Alteration at Ellerslie was first-class, as in both races won by him he was several lengths from the leaders three furlongs from home. Here Gray called on tho “leggy” bay, which re-; sponded at once, and putting in greaf work over tho concluding stages won like a good' horse. After seeing Elevation’s son put up such a good fight to Marqucteur at Egmont, the writer was quite prepared for the Auckland wins, and moreover fancies that where the track is roomy and the going soft the New Plymouth-owned gelding will win in good company. In Australia it is. becoming fashionable to bestow Maori names on horses, hut the owners do not trouble to find out the correct spelling of such names, as the following will show: Tenarqui (Tonakoe), Whyariki (Wairiki), Kaipni (Kapai). There are many others just as bad, but those noted are sufficient. An owner well-known in these parts had’ a turn of luck at the recent Auckland meeting. He intended investing £SO ona horse in the Jervois Handicap, but, delaying too long, had the window shut down on his face. He asked the clerk to take the commission, but that servant refused; but not to be denied he sought the president, but that official could not help him. as the rule is strict on this point at Ellerslie. After all the fuss the “good thing” went under, and the next good “punt” the same “sport” had was on a winner.

Tho oldest horse at present in training in England is Wild Aster (Victor Wild —Asteria). This gelding is 18 years old. and has won £IO,OOO in stakes, earned in England, France and Germany, During the war he was used as a charger, and at the signing of the armistice was again put in training. Ho started in a hurdle race recently, and in a field of nine dead-heated with Nuit Blanche, to which ho was giving 151 b. in weight. Bon Rove (12.7) is _ remarkably well treated in t) 1 ® Napier Steeplechase, which event is set down for decision next week. Last season this gelding won at Hia first attempt, when he carried 12st. to the front in, the Park

Steeplechase .at Napier Park, He was unlucky to lose to Nita, when carrying 12.4, in the Hawke’s Bay Steeplechase. In his thinl attempt (Wellington Steeplechase) ho fell at the last jump when looking to have a winning chance, and on the second day of the same meeting ho successfully carried 11.13 to the front and beat a splendid field in the July Steeplechase. The brace of races run by Waimai during the Great Northern campaign were really high-class, and one is safe in stating that no better performance? have ever been registered over the historical Ellerslie course than those run by Spalpeen‘s son last week. Provided , his trainer can produce his charge in the same condition, he will give the Wellington and National Steeplechases a “shock” this year.
