TO BANISH WASHING DAY. . “No more washing days for city, women of Britain,” is a prospect suggested by the Women’s Housing sub-Uom-mittee of the Ministry of Keconstruction, which was charged to inquire into problems affecting the housewife and went particularly into the washing day problem. Communal wash houses, where each woman takes hex - turn, were found to bo unpopular. A common wash house for a block of tenements is restricted in its 'usefulness. What the committee suggest is an extension of the “washbag” principle. The scheme would entail the establishment either by municipalities or by cooperative effort, of power laundries, worked preferably by electricity, with the most modern plant. The washing of each family would bo put in a bag, collected, washed by elec- i trie power, mangled or wrung out in a machine, '“rough'dried,” and sent hack, the ironing and finishing of the articles being done at home. Each bagful would be washed separately to prevent the need for marking the articles. ■ The committee estimate that a family bag of 160 mixed articles, small and large, could be washed for about 14 cents (7d!). •
