SPORTING.

THE AUCKLAND MEETING

NOTES BY “HISTORICUS.”

(By Telegraph.- —Special to Herald.)

MARTON, June 6. The weather was again glorious, the attendance good, and the track in perfect condition for the third day’s racing. No Surrender had a .slight call over Ulster in the betting on the Tamaki Steeple. Ulster waited on Jaoaranda, and No Surrender till the last fence, when he came away and won easily. For some reason Monopole, which ran badly on the opening day, was installed favourite for the Orakei Hurdles, but Garryowon and T.ofhclla had friends. The latter was mu. 1 , h-surc, hut ran a good race, only to be beaten in the run home by Benzinp. Gunwale was leading two .jumps from home, when he fell. Twelve thousand pounds were, invested on the York "Welter, Alteration, which was favourite, carrying £7OO more than "White Blaze and Bedford, while several others carried just on four figures. After a long delay at the post the start -was a. wretched one. Housewife and White Blaze were hopelessly left, while Paddington Green lost his rider at the halfmile. Alteration was a long way hack, but from here put in a long run on the outside, and was a winner half a furlong from home; his performance was good. Waimai, Master Lupin and Troublesome were backed pound for pound in the Winter Steeplechase. Waimai gave a marvellous exhibition of jumping, leading all the way till the last jump, where he stood off too far, falling heavily and letting Troublesome, which finished well, win easily. Master Lupin again gave a. good performance, hnt the weight stopped him over the last furlong. Bore fell and Arlington baulked.

Kauri King finished up a better favourite than Ditto and Thrace for the Campbell Hurdles. All three ran well, the last-named winning over the last hundred yards. Just on £13,000 was invested on the Visitors’ Handicap, Rekanui carrying £SOO more than Madam Ristori. The latter drew the outside position, hut Gray got her away like a flash, and she never looked like getting beaten. Rekanui was well placed at the start, hut finished badly. Betting on the Fitzroy Welter was very heavy. General Stephen being favourite, but he was never prominent, Tamaroa winning all the way from Gray’s mount, Scottish Knight, which just lasted long enough to secure second place.
