Four hundred were present at the jubilee dinner of the Colonial Listituto at the Connaught Rooms. The gathering was fully representative of the Empire. Sir Joseph Cook proposed the health of the Dime of Connaught. Mr. Massey, Sir Joseph Ward, Sir Alexander Godley, Sir liiomas Mackenzie, Bishop Montgomery and the Agents-General represented Australasia. Mr. Hughes was indisposed. The Duke of Connaught, who presided, announced that a lund had been opened to erect new institute buildings with a large hail, to which £II,OOO has already been subscribed. When the institute was founded in 1868 it had 174 members, now it has 14,000, but it was essential to extend the work in order to include democracy. The institute had also outgrown its name and would have to find a name more fully expressing the now aims and ideals of the institute.

Mr Massey, in proposing the toast of the Hoyal Family, paid a tribute to the part the Maoris had played in the war. He welcomed the coming visit of tho Prince of Wales to tiro Dominions, when his welcome would bo as cordial as that extended to his father. 1

Lord Bryce, in proposing the toast of the United Empire, (mid it was strong because it was clastic. The value of the system had been proved in the war when all parts fought so valiantly that none surpassed the others because all surpassed themselves. Even missionaries and others who could not serve in the army in Europe sent a quarter of their year’s salaries to assist the Imperial cause.
