OTAGO UNIVERSITY.

REQUEST FOR £40,000. Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, June 5. A deputation from the University Council waited on the Hon. J. A. Hanan and asked for a grant of £40,000 for necessary extensions to meet the immediate wants of students, principally medical, the accommodation being overcrowded. Last year there were 640 students, and this year will start with 900. The Minister, in a sympathetic reply, asked if it iwas possible to cut the amount down. The Chancellor replied that all tho claims were absolutely essential to meet the needs of students now here. The Minister said he would get a report from the Director-General. He could see the position called for immediate action. The money at the disposal of the Education Department did not meet all requirements. In this case he did not want to hang the matter up and ■would, like to do, something immediately.
