A police investigation into the damage to the plate glass windows or Charles Shalfoon's shop resulted in the discovery of a revolver bullet, a man s cap, and a glass bottle inside the broken window,. The owner of tb© cap has been identified. Evidently the revolver was fired at the window at short range and the bottle used to enlarge the hole. flu his excitement the culprit apparently fell through the window into the shop and forgot to- recover his cap and bottle when making his escape. BURSARIES FOR MINING . STUDENTS. DUNEDIN, June 4. A deputation representing the School of Mines waited on the Hon, W. D. S. MacDonald and urged the Department of Mines to offer, say, ten bursaries of £SO, with fees for students living away from home. It was pointed out that at the end of the course it meant they would have a claim on the services of these students. The deputation ; also suggested that better use _be made hy the staff investigating mining problems of the assistants provided. Professors Park, Waters, and Berison were able to do something regarding research into the mining problems of the country. The Minister expressed his agreement with the deputation. Last year only one man won a bursary. If he had not tho power to do/vhat was ashed ho was prepared to ask his, colleagues to vote wlvht was necessary. The country could well afford -to have a thorough expert examination of its mineral resources. . ' PROTECTION OF SOLDIERS. WELLINGTON, June. 4. ' An Order-in-Couucil has been promulgated amending the regulations, recently issued for the protection, of soldiers and discharged soldiers. Tho definition “recently discharged V soldiers” is amended to include soldiers within twelve months immediately succeeding their return, instead of six months as in the original regulations. It is further provided that nothing in the regulations shall apply to proceedings taken in respect to the balance for the time being of an account current of any soldier or discharged soldier with any bank, or approved trading company, or approved merchant, or with respect to any mortgage, bill of sale or other security securing such account current, and all such proceedings may bo taken accordingly without the consent of the Attorney-General. For tho purposes of this clause an approved merchant or approved trading company means any company, firm, or persons approved in that behalf by tho Attorney-General. \ 1
