TARANAKI COUNTY COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING. i The monthly meeting of the Taranaki County Council was continued on Monday afternoon, tho following additional business being transacted: — ELECTRICAL CHER ENT—TR A NSAIISSION LINES. An application was received from the Inglewood Borough Council for permission to erect transmission linos for electric current over certain areas within the county boundary. Air. J. Sutherland, Mayor, of Inglewood, accompanied by Mr. Stewart, electrical engineer, waited on the council in support of tho application, Air. Sutherland explaining that the borough had been approached by several people and companies to supply them with power. The borough proposed to got all its power from the New Plymouth scheme, and when they wore linked up they would be m a position to supply current at a very low rats. Before they could do so, however, they needed permission of the County Council to erect the necessary transmission lines. ■ Luring the discussion which ensued Councillor Capper said there was a movement for tho formation of a special area in the Aloa Riding, and ho did not think any right should be given to any other body that would conflict with the proposed special area’s operations. Other councillors were also opposed to granting the sale rights for the erection of transmission lines to tho Inglewood Borough Council. At a later stage it was decided to obtain legal opinion from the county solicitors on the matter. AIANGORET ROAD. Air. Benoni White wrote in reply to tho council’s letter in regard to the proposed extension of work on the AJangorei Road, ashing what would be the corresponding extension of the rating area to be included. He pointed out that property owners along the proposed extension portion of road were already paying a special rate for metalling the road, and he thought the council should' not increase the burden on the petitioners already in the special rating area. It was decided to reply to the effect that it,was for the settlers to define the rating area, and not the County Council, ■ - NOXIOUS WEEDS. The Hon. W. D. S. AlacDonald, Alinister of Agriculture, wrote acknowledging receipt of a copy of the resolution passed by the council on the subject of the necessity for the strict enforcement of the Noxious Weeds Act, and stated that the representations would receive careful consideration. MOMONA BRIDGE. The Public AVorks Department wrote in regard to the grant for the Aloraona Stream Bridge, stating that of tho original grant of £470 the council had received a progress payment of £9O in girders, etc., • and the balance, therefore, was £3BO. Tho resident engineer having reported that the work now would cost £OBO, authority for the extra £l5O was being issued. It was decided to proceed with the work when the weather was favourable. PROPOSED £60,000 LOAN. The State Advances Office wrote in reply to tho council’s application for consent to a loan of £60,000 for tarsealing the county roads, stating that provided the loan was raised at a rate of interest not exceeding oi per cent, per annum to the lender the department would lay the matter before the ActiugMinister of Finance foz* his consideration. , The Public Trust Office wrote stating teat the council’s application for a loan of £60,000 had been granted at 5i per cent, per annum, plus 11- per cent, sinking fund, for a term of 20 years, and subject to 1 per cent, premium interest being paid on all monies not lifted by duly 28 next. A discussion arose re the proposed Inglewood County, the suggestion being made that, m view of the Commission’s report, the amount of the loan should be reduced by approximately £20,000 r proposed to be expended in the Aloa Riding. It was decided to write protesting ; against the proposed charge of 1 per cent, premium on tho amount of the Joan not lifted, and to make an amended application for a loan of £40,500. PEACE MEMORIALS. The Minister of Internal Affairs wrote in regard to objects in which local bodies might spend money out of their funds on permanent peace memorials. Ihe objects considered suitable ‘were : town halls, libraries, swimming baths fountains, avenues of trees, band ro- ' tundas, parks, recreation grounds and ' statues. Xo monies could be spent on i peace memorials which were required I by law to be used for other specific pur- | P oses - IT U'as pointed out that this , would have no bearing on the Govern- ■ mont subsidy in connection with peace celebrations, which subsidy would not 1 be paid in respect of permanent peace memorials. | NGAAIOTU ROAD. M l '- W. Barnett, in reply to the council s letter inquiring as to what the settiers on the nnm ©tailed portion of tho Ngamotu Read were prepared to contribute towards the cost of metalling, wrote that they were not prepared to do anything, as they thought the least the council could do was to make nj> the balance necessary to complete the work. It was decided to wiite the Public Works Department asking for an additional grant of £IOO to complete the work, and also to ask Air. S. G. Smith? M.P., to support the application. MISCELLANEOUS. Air. F. T. Bellringer, Town Clerk of New Plymouth, wrote to the effect that the Borough Council was unable to accept the County Council’s offer in regard to Pt. Native Reserve 23 and Lots 27 and 32, Section 126, Glenavon, for sale as a metal reserve.

A copy of the report of the Commission respecting the proposed Inglewood County was received from the Minister of Internal Affairs. —Consideration or the matter was deferred until next meeting. The matter of getting stone at the Tiraaru was left in tho hands of the riding members and the inspector to deal with. Accounts were passed for payment as follows:—General expenses £722 3s lod, Aloa. Riding £97 8s 6d, Mangoroi Riding £321 2s 4ft. Waitara Riding £279 Is, Oniata Riding £lsl 3s lid, Okato Riding £293 18s 2d; total, £1941 6s Gd.
