CANTERBURY PRODUCE MARKET

CHRISTCHURCH, May 30. The cold southerly weather, with rain on the plains and snow on tho hills, that has prevailed intermittently during the week has had the effect of hardening tho prices of oats-and oatsheaf chaff. Even at tho prices now quoted for oats at country stations it is doubtful if any quantity could ho obtained if wanted immediately. Growers are holding firmly, and the weather makes them more reluctant to soil. Already it is reported that oats are being fed to sheep, so short has tho available toed become. A grade Gartons arc now quoted at 4s Id to 4s 2d per bushel; B grade, 3s XOd to 4s; Algerians, 3s 10(1 to 4s; Danish, 3s (id to 3s 8d; and good heavy dark Duns, 4 s to 4s 2d, at country stations. Oatshcaf chaff has firmed in sympathy with oats, the demand now being greater, since the break in the weather, and is now quoted at £6 (is to £6 10s per ton, at country stations, for good bright quality. There is now more movement in grass and clover seeds. Perennial ryegrass is scarce, none being on offer, and is worth 4s (id to 4s 9d per bushel at country stations, and Italian is realising 4s to 4,s 3d. Cowgrass is firmer and is quoted at Is to Is 2d, per lb., while white clover is now saleable at 10d to Is per lb. There is a good demand for mangels. They are soiling at £2 os per ton at country stations, and some of tho largo growers archolding for £2 10s. Linseed is firmer and is now quoted at £lB 5s to £lB 10s per ton at stations. Tho potato market is somewhat unsettled, through prospective business with Sydney having fallen through. It is also reported that northern merchants have been trying to re-sell their speculative purchases. The local price still keeps fairly steady, £6 5s to £G 10s per ton at country stations being tho quotation. Tho OKiion market is easier, and tho market price is now £7 to £7 10s per ton at country stations.
