THE AUCKLAND MEETING

(By "Historians.”)

ELLERSLIE, June 2. Tho weather was glorious, the track holding, and tho attendance large for the opening day of the Auckland meeting. Tenacious had a slight advantage over Bore in the betting on tho Maiden Steeplechase. The latter has lightened up and failed over the last half-mile, when Uilster looked 'unbeatable, but Tenacious camo fast over tho last furlong and just won. Hallow was a big favourite for the Jcrvois Handicap, and ran well for a while. Ho should do bettor later. Comedy Prince scored very easily from Hincmaru, which is very well and will take beating in tho Carbine Plate, as she had a big weight to-day. Garryowcu received big support for the Maiden Hurdles. He just won, after leading most of the way. Munster and Orphan fell. Refomation made a bad jump at tho last fence or he might have wo.n Loolieililia should Iran wei on Thursday. Tho sum of £12,500 was invested on the Northern Hurdles, Sleight-of-hand being a firm favourite, from Thrace and Cynic. Paraoa was paying just on two limits. The race was spoilt by a number of accidents, Art, Paraoa, and Sleight-of-hand falling in the, last halfmile, when all three had excellent chances. Two furlongs from home Cynic opened un a lead of six lengths, but made a bad jump at the last fence and had to bo ridden out to win by a length. Sleight-of-hand and Paraoa should play a prominent part in tho next two days. Kauri King ran wed and finished fourth, while Colonel Sonlt broke down.

Mangamahoe carried £IOO more than Alteration for the Cornwall Handicap. White Blaze ted for a milo from Bedford, with botli favourites at the tail end of the field. Turning for home Gray brought Alteration on the outside, and finishing like a racehorse, won comfortably, Mangamnhoo just cutting Bedford out of second money. The latter ran a great race and should be- particularly bard on Thursday, provided the top weights are not over-crushed with weight.

The hunters were not a good lot. Bcnzina won nicely, but had Roach handled _ Peneton with any judgment the gelding must have won, and on his showing will take a power of beating in the Hunt Cup to-morrow. Taimai was favourite for the Members’ Handicap, but ran badly, Maili-n'-Cowrie winning all the way. Parisian Diamond, with Gray up, ran well enough to suggest a possibility on Tuesday.
