FITZROY BOWLING CLUB.

SOCIAL AND DANCE. A very enjoyable social and dance was held in the Good Templar Hall on Friday night by the Fitzroy Bowling and Croquet Club, the function having been arranged in honour of the win of Mr. P. Jurly’s rink ih the citizens’ match at the Taranaki tournament. Miss George (piano) and Mr. West (flute) provided the dance music and Messrs. A, Roberts and W. Beadle carried out the duties of M’s.C. Progressive euchre, in charge of Mr. P. Jury, was played by the nomdancers, and during an interval songs were rendered by Misses J. Bennett and Abbott, Mrs. Northern and Mr. B'. Bellringer, whilst Mr. F. W. G. M'Leod contributed cornet solos. The accompaniments were played by Miss Bennett and Miss George. The president of the club, Mr. S. J Smith, in the course of a few remarks, congratulated Mr. Jury and the members of his rink on the merit of their win, and went on to explain that last year, when Mr. Abbott’s rink won the Taranaki tournament, a complimentary social was tendered to him in the pavilion and that it was confined to the men, but this year it had been decided to include the ladies of the Croquet Club also. Mr. Smith expressed the opinion that every bowling club should have its croquet club tor the ladies and jocularly remarked that if the bowlers persuaded their wives to become members there would bo no further trouble at home, because the chances were that the husband would arrive home first and would be waiting for his wife, whereas without The croquet lawns the position was invariably reversed. Referring to the success of Fitzroy Club rinks in last season’s tournaments, both in New Plymouth and other centres, Mr. Smith said that with the exception of the Auckland tournament they- had reached the semifinals in every case. Ho again extended congratulations to the winning rink in whoso honour the social was held— Oxcnham, Buciklo, S. Rundle and Jury. Their performance was a particularly good one, more especially when it was remembered that in the final they defeated that very strong Gordon— Christie combination from Wanganui. Referring to the play during the past season, Mr. Smith said that a great deal of the enjoyment derived was undoubtedly due to the splendid condition or the green, and in this connection he said the green warden (Mr. H. Price) and the custodian (Mr. H. Hurle) were deserving of the very best thanks of the club. (Applause.) Mr. Jury, in responding, expressed his appreciation of the president’s kindly references to the success of his rink, and said he thought the credit for the win was due more to the other players than himself. He hoped the Fitzroy Club would in the future lead many winners to the green. (Applause.) Supper was served by the ladies and was keenly appreciated .
