VOGELTOWN SCHOOL.

OPENING CEREMONY. Thursday was a red-letter day in the history of Vogeltown and of Frankleigh Park inasmuch as it witnessed the opening of the fine new school which has been erected at the -western end of Smith Street, Vogeltown, the object in selecting this site being that a school elected thereon would also serve Frankleigh Park. Agitation for a day school in this district has extended over many years and although the residents have had the whole-hearted support of Hie Education Board, the Education Department trp to some four years ago considered there were more urgent demands upon the funds at its disposal, hence all overtures were unsuccessful except that the Department did go so far as to acquire the land for the school site. Eventually a grant was riiado for the erection of a school and the Education Board was on the point of calling tenders when war broke out, the result being that on the suggestion of the Department all expenditure as far as possible would be curtailed for the time being. The position however became so 'acute as time went on that the Board again made a strong representation to the Department for a renewal of the grant, and eventually this was forthcoming, and without any further delay the Board, through its overseer, Mr. C. Moore, pushed on with the work, and 10-day the Vogeltown and Frankleigh Park .suburbs have an ideal little school. The building which is of* concrete, was designed by Mr. Mooro, and the whole of the work with the exception of the plastering has been carried out by the board’s staff, under his supervision. The design is an admirable one, the class-rooms being lofty' and perfectly Lighted and ventilated. So far two commodious class-rooms have been provided whilst the large entrance hall will do .service for the time being as a third. " The building really forms the nucleus■ of a six class-room school ■ and it is so constructed that the addif tions could be built as required 'without in any way interfering with the architectural features. In fact as the additional class-rooms are added the general appearance of an already attractive building will be enhanced. The class-rooms are heated with Unique stoves., Shelter sheds are provided for both boys and girls and the sanitary conveniences are. on the most modern lines, as is the" general equipment of the whole school. Despite the unfavourable climatic conditions—there were frequent cold showers from the west—there was a large attendance of Vogeltown and Frankleigh Park residents, and ail viedwith each other to make the function as enjoyable as possible. From 1.30 to 2.80 sports had been arranged for the amusement of the children, and all appeared to he in proud possession of toys or some other souvenir before the programme was concluded, whilst lollie scrambles added further-enjoyment for the youngsters.
