Mr. J. Corrigall left for Dunedin this morning.

The Labour Party on Tuesday chose Mr. William Gardiner Paul as candidate for the Waitaki seat at the general election. He contested Waitaki in 1910. Advice has been received in Hawera than Major Cox, who recently underwent an operation at i Christchurch for an old wound trouble, is progresting satisfactorily.—Star. _ 1 Mr. Archie Thompson, who was in business for some years in New Plymouth, has returned 1 after an extended holiday, and will probably settle here again.

Sir James Allen, on Thursday, said that, though he had no definite information on the point, he believed that Mr. Massey and Sir Joseph Ward would be back in the Dominion towards the end of July. As the result of a ballot by dairy factories in the Hawke’s Bay and Bush Districts, Mr. T. Moss was selected as official candidate to represent the districts on the executive of the National Dairy Association. i

There recently passed away in Brockville, Ontario, Canada, Mr. William H. Comstock, who was 89 years of age. He amassed a great fortune as the proprietor - of Dr. Morse’s Indian Root Pills, a business which he conducted for over •sixty years.

The Weekly Dispatch says that if Sir Douglas Haig declines the command in India the choice will'be made tween General Birdwood and General Rawlinson. The former is also mentioned for the Governorship of New Zealand, after visiting Australia in the autumn.—United Service.

News has been received from Melbourne of the death of Mri Charlie Taylor. manager of the Taylor-Carrington Company, which was hastened by has sun’s death from influenza. A slight paralytic stroke was followed 1 by a more serious one, Which had a fatal result. Mr. Taylor was a frequent visitor years ago to New Plymouth.
