WAITARA.

FROM OUli OWN CORRESPONDENT. Nominations closed on Tuesday to fill the two scats on the Borough Conned rendered vacant by the resignation ot Councillors hi. George and W. Procter. There were nominated Messrs. T. Buchanan, E. George, C. N. Johnstone, and A. \V. Ogle, so that there will bo another election.. On Friday the election takes place to iill the first four vacancies, and the election for the other .two takes place on Monday next. There is no doubt who should be elected in' the financial embarrassment in which, the borough is placed, and it is to bo hoped that the ratepayers will put on one side personal feelings and vote for the men that they consider will do the best work. The new council will have ,a difficult and possibly a not very pleasant task, but from the list of candidates there should bo elected a good strong council that can bo relied on to straighten out a most difficult tangle.

The cold southerly wind that is blowing is shrivelling up nature and humanity. There is no coal to be bad and most of the homes are lirolcss or nearly so. One local linn has a list oi nearly 10U applicants for coal that has not yet come to hand for distribution, aud a good deal of resentment is felt that one or two favoured individuals are said to have received trucks ol coal while a hundred or more cannot get any. 'I his system of rationing is certainly contrary to tho spirit of the coal regulation, to say tho least. Moht people are willing to cut down their consumption of fuel to help to meet tho existing emergency, but are “up against” one being chosen and fifty left.
