INGLEWOOD.

THOM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT. August 16.—The thunderstorm this week was startling to say the least of it. .Many telephones were put out of order, and a number of houses were in darkness Giving to the fusing of the electric wires. Mr. Frank Drake’s chimney was struck, and bricks scattered in all directions. The main electric switchboard was blown out, part of it striking Mrs. Drake, who. was ironing at the time. Fortunately she was not hurt. I have heard that there wore some who thought the end was near, and who vowed they would lead a new life, etc., but after all danger was past, they, like Fagin in “Oliver Twist,” would “pray to-morrow.” Inglewood players handed in the best cards at the New Plymouth golf links yesterday in the mixed foursome Red Crass match, Mr. and Mrs. Surrey winning with a score of 87 net, Mr.' Gudgeon and Miss Surrey being next with a score of 89 net. The annual meeting of the Presbyterian Church is being held to-night (Friday) in the Dmids Hall, when, as usual, an •excellent programme, will bo presented after the business has been finished. The Inglewood school football team will try conclusions with Central A tomorrow morning at Inglewood. The Plunket Society was favoured with a glorious night for the euchre party and dance on Thursday. There was a record attendance for euchre, 20 tables being engaged. There--were not quite so many dancers ns was anticipated, but those who went report a “jolly time.” Mr. J. Sutherland, assisted hy Mr. A. Stockman, provided tho music, and Mr. F. CodcT made, a capable M.C. The Senior Cadets were responsible for the floor. The prizes were won by: Mrs. Heel 1, Mrs. .Heine 2; Mr. T. Nicholls 1, Mr. B. Brown 2 (the prizes in each case being one guinea for first and half-guinea for second, order for goods). Tho patriotic mart on Saturday next, August 24, will he in charge of the Inglewood ConfSiittee, and will he in aid of the Copper Trail. Inglewood has already sent £lO2 towards tho Conner Trail, and has, I believe, over £loo ready to send again. Gifts of flowers, produce, cakes, eggs, etc., will be very welcome at th© mart, as well as monetary gifts. A farewell social is being given to Mr. and Mrs. H. G. 'Williams in tho Parish Hall on Monday, August 19.
