In the Magistrate’s Court this morning during tho hearing of several charges against shop-owners of failing to give employees a half-holiday ns provided by law, the defendants appeared not to know that they could obtain permits to oipploy these hands on 30 evenings during tho year. Tho inspector of factories pointed out that the Act providing for this had been in force since before 1908 and surely shopkeepers had had time to become familiar with it. This enabled employers, though they had to give the usual half-holiday, to deal with rush work in the evenings.
