'

The Manual and Technical Committee recommended: —That the chairman be requested to make urgent representations to the department when he is in Wellington for a grant to enable the hoard r.o carry out the additions to the New Plymouth Technical College containing the space originally applied for. —Adopted. The Senior Inspector (Mr. A. J. Morton) reported that in his opinion the provision of a third classroom was urgently demanded at Auroa School, where there were 115 pupils, and the number would probably increase still further. Regarding an application for, a new school at Arawhata, the information supplied was incomplete. The number of children was stated as eight in the although 19 of school age were mentioned in the lists. Of the 10 it was definitely stated that five would not attend thenew school. The exact position-of tlm proposed school was not indicated. Apparently there' was a sufficient number of school children, if all attended, to warrant the establishment of a Grade 1 school. More definite information was, however, necessary .—The department will be communicated with regarding Auroa,' and the matter of further information re Arawhata was referred to Mr. White.

NEAV SCHOOLS AND REPAIRS. The Overseer (Air. C. H. Moore) reported as follows: Alt. Messcngflt.—This school is completed and ready tor occupation. AVo have taken over the old school and made it into a shelter shed, as arranged with the committee. The present entrance is not oh the proper boundary. I understand the committee will make a new "entrance, and new gates will be supplied then. Waitara Technical.—Wo have this work well in hand. Okahukura. —The department haying made a grant for the additions to this school, 1 am making arrangements to have the work carried out as agreed between tlie board and the committee. Alatiero. —The contracts let for the new school and general renovating of the residence at Matiorc, and tho reinstating of the washhouse and other work at Otattgiwai, are just about completed. I propose to pay a final visit of inspection as soon as possible. Aukopae.—The slow arrival of tho timber on the .site has rather delayed making a start with the new, school. All material is on the way, and I hope a start will he made next week. 1 . Urenui. —AVo have just about finished the painting and general repairs to both school and residence. AVe have left the out-offices uhpainted, as 1 propose to renew’ these m the near' future. Midhirst. —AVe have painted the inside of the kitchen at tho residence; a lot of general repair work at tho school has yet to receive attention. Omata. —As instructed I have consulted with the Omata School Committee in the matter of asphalting between the back of school and the shelter shed, and forming a pathway round the school. This is a necessary work : as it is at present a lot of water runs down the playground towards the school. Tho committee are willing to pay £1 to £l, and I would respectfully recommend that a grant up to £lO ho made. Technical Buildings.—A grant has been made for new hoys latiines. Hie department has also further suggested putting two classrooms on to the art room wing £built to carry another storey) and leaving out the proposed extension of the commeicial classroom wine. ] have a plan of this proposed work in hand. . , ~ ' , Plans —1 have gone into the matter of additions to several schools with tho Chief Inspector, and I am working on the plans for this proposed work. It is a very difficult matter to .prevent overcrowding in some of the classrooms,; owins to t-fic construction of too buildings, and vet at the same time the total area satisfies the department’s requirements, and the application for a grant is generally refused. Workshop.—AVe have completed the whole of the joinery and furniture for Aft Messenger and Aukopae schools, andi also tho joinery for AVaitara Technical School The new desks for renewal at Ahititi, Mokau and Awakino were completed and forwarded to AVaitara. General.—la the matter of school

tanks, I would respectfully suggest that if the present price of iron keep! up it will be necessary to erect concrete tank* where possible; in many cases the committees would) probably pay part of the cost. ' - d " The, overseer was instructed to prepare estimates for the construction, of concrete tanks, taking the cost of gravel into consideration.
