ON THE BRITISH NEAR CAIBRAI.

SOME EXCITING EXPERIENCES. BRITISH AND FRENCH HOLDING THE PIAVE. The very vigorous German attack on the right flank of the new British salient near Cambrai produced a temporary breach in the line and some thrilling incidents ensued. The Guards were brought up and succeeded in regaining the lost ground. At the. easterly point of the salient our men have been withdrawn across the St. Qnentin Canal from Masuieres, a village that was difficult to hold The Russian position shows no sign of clearing up. tol. Repin <rion and others are drawing gloomy pictures of what may happen when German troops are "brought from the eastein front. The process of transfer will he very slow, and it will be possihie to provide adequate troops from America to meet them, even if for a month or two the Allies have to supply rather more than usual. The British and French troops Are now on the line of the Piave" in Italy and the Austrians will find them a fairly tough proposition.
