The surrender of Dar-rs-Salaam was preceded by close attacks which began on September 3 by the naval forces in whalers, conjointly with a heavy bombardment of- tho enemy’s positions north of the town and tlie' advance of troops. Landings were effected at two .spots. Tho enemy evacuated the town, which was virtually undamaged wherethe Germans wore not in occupation. ■
