Brigadier-General Sir Andrew Russell says:—“l see recruiting is satisfactory. 1 am sorry to think that they wiil bo wanted, every one of them. The class of men coming forward is very good, and our reiniorcements compare well witii any I have seen at Mudros, where most come on their way to the Peninsula. Age is of importance. Voting fellows under 21 don’t wear wcllj their stomachs don’t seem to hold out against diarrhoea and enteric. Men from 25 to 65 years arc the best, though the young ones, no doubt, can giro us older men a beating in getting over the ground fast. But then soldiering does not include a daily charge. Iml does include a daily encounter with microbes. The Mounted Brigade has had a rest lor nearly two months, and we arc off any day to the Peninsula, or elsewhere. I hope we go as well in the next scries as in the last. , "AATmt we do want is u chance of lighting as Mounted Rides. and 1 had hopes that the Salonika venture might, and may still, have given us the chance. The men conk! not have 1 ought better. 1 believe we'shall want all the cardigan jackets we can get before winter is over (at the end of April). The prospect of a winter in the trenches is enough to make one feel cold. Another twelve months should see the job through, and tho.-e of us who survive will be glad to tic up alongside AVellington wharf. General Monro, the new Commander-in-CTiief, has just inspected us. If looks go for anything wo have got a fighting general.”
