FINE DISPLAY OF POTATOES

AT MESSRS. WEBSTER BEOS.’ MART.

For many years past the exhibits of potatoes grown by Mr. L. B. Webster, of New I'Jymoutb, have formed one of the features of the annual held in connection with the New X'fymouth Horticultural Society, but unfortunately this year owing to Mr. Webster being absent from the district he was unable to arrange for his usual display, but that he has been equally as successful in growing different varieties of potatoes this year as in former years, considering the unfortunate season, is clearly demonstrated by the display which is now being made at Webster Bros.’ Mart. There are nineteen varieties on view, and the tubers were all grown by Mr. L. B. Webster at his residence. Mr. Webster, who makes a hobby of potato-culture, particularly wishes to emphasise on growers the importance of using the right kind of seed and tho mannor in which the tuber should be treated in Taranaki soil. The collection comprised Robin Adair (a superb lot). White Elephant, Coronation, Chapman, Vitality, Mayfield, Blossom, Queen Mary, Sutton’s May Queen, Maori Chief. Irish Queen, King .Edward, Sutton’s Acquisition, Gamekeeper, Irish Red, Gold Coin, Ut>-to-Date, Sutton’s No. 26, Sutton’s Abundance, and La Royal (a perfect white kidney potato). There is not a sign of blight or disease on any of the potatoes, and Mr. Webster informed one of our representatives that there has not been a sign of blight in his garden this year, although tho season has been so unfavourable. Ho considers this due to judicious spraj’ing and the use of proper manure.
