RUSSIANS FALL BACK ON NEW LINE.
A cablegram from Amsterdam to-day gives a very favourable view of the position. The Germans are stated to have sent 400,000 men into Belgium, of whom 300,000 were put in the line against the French to strengthen the Germans or replace losses, and 100,000 held in reserve. The reserves, however, had hurriedly to be thrown into the line against the British at La Bassee. Sir John French’s report does not disagree with this statement, nor does it confirm it. He, however-, tells of British gains at Ypres, Festubert and Hooge. For the Germans to collect 400,000 men for Belgium at this stage of the campaign shows that the position is growing serious there. The French report from Dunkirk that 150,000 Germans are crushed into an area of 4£ miles where they are being cut up is also satisfactory. It should, however, bo remembered that none of the reports, except that of Sir John French, are official. The Italians report some dashing attacks on mountain positions, but no big battle-,lias yet taken place. The Russians have from the San and taken up a position on the Tanew River, whi ch is beyond the boundaries of Galicia. This position is said to lie joined up with that at Grodek. If, as is stated, the object of the advance on Lemberg is to impress Roumania and Bulgaria it seems to have been successful
