The Straits of the Dardanelles, which lead from the Mediterranean Into the sea or Marmora, separate Europe from Asia. The breadth, averaging anout two miles, varies from 1400 yards at its narrowest part to four miles at its widest. At the western entrance, a distance of two miles separates the forts at Cape Hellcs, or ilcddul Eahr, on the European side, and Kum Kale on the Asiatic. There are also hereabouts earthworks, .and other fortifications lino the straits, particularly at the narrowest part between Eelid Bahr, and Kale Sultanieh, some .12 miles from the entrance, the total length of the straits being 35 miles. The points of disembarkation of General Hamilton’s force are indicated by X.
