EDUCATION DISTRICTS.
SOUTHLAND EVIDENCE. PER Pit ESS ASSOCIATION. INVERCARGILL, April 30. The Education Districts Commission commenced taking evidence in Invercargill to-day. Resolutions from practically every school , committee in the district urging the retention of the Southland education district were received. That evidence consisted of an official statement from the Southland Board arguing that the district should be retained, on the ground of efficiency and economy, and statements by Messrs. John Fisher (ex-chairman of the board). J. Crosby Smith (ex-mem-ber of the board). Dr. Hansen (Director of the Technical College), Inspector IVylie, J. T. Stevens, and J. MacGihbo" (members of tho board). It was evident from the trend of questions put to witnesses that the members of tho commission held the view that a larger district made for efficiency, as a greater field of opportunity "attracted ambitious teachers. This suggestion was mot by witnesses, who contended 'that 'tho standards of efficiency were set, and were complied with as" satisfactorily in Southland ns elsewhere. The commission will Joa-ve for. Dunedin to-morrow, taking evidence there on Monday.
