The Hon. Sir Bober* Stout. A.C.M.G., Lhief Justice, arrived in town on Saturday night, with other members of tho Prison? Board, and will leave again tomorrow.

Melbourne reports the sudden death from heart failure of Mr. M‘Cnnley Muart. president of the Victorian Commercial 1 ravolleis’ Association. -Mr. M. J. Chaney, who recently underwent an operation in Miss Baker’s private hospital, has sufficiently recovered to bo able to return home. Captain MacDonald, of Hamilton, who was severely wounded at the Dardanelles. is, wo believe, a grandson of a Mr. MacDonald who came out to Taranaki in ISoOand settled on the land at Tatarainiakn. Tim family subsequently went to Haglnn.

Lieutenant I* rater, whose death i* announced to-day, was a son of Mr. .Hubert I*rater, of Auckland. Ho would bo about 23 years old, and has many friends in New Plymouth, who will be deoplv grieved to hear of his death. He was a prominent tennis-player in Auckland, and carried off one or two prizes when competing at tho Taranaki tournament a year or two ago.

Mr. Emory, head of the Savings Bank and Advances to Settlers Department of ictoria, has been spending two or three days in New Plymouth, and loft for Palmerston North this morning. Air. Emory is a Past Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Victoria, and will represent that body at tho 2.5 th anniversary gathering of the Grand Lodge of New Zealand in Wellington, next week.
