THE TURF

'Field-glass.’*) FIXTURES. May I—Hawkers Bay J.C. Autumn. May 5 and 6—Marlborough K.C. Autumn. May 6 and 7—Ashburton County R.C. Autumn. May 20 and 21—North Otago J.C. ■Winter. May 20 and 22—’Wanganui J.C. Winter. Simple Sam is now an inmate of P. Johnson’s stable. Tattorloy is giving good exhibitions over the schooling hurdles at Hastings. Soldiers’ Chorus is still very lame, and it is doubtful if he will over stand training again. Goldsmc is to be given a spoil of three or four months, and has been turned out till about the middle of August. Mr. P. Seally has named his two-year-old Idly, by Conqueror—Energy, Prosperous. Cornelian was produced on tho second day of the Mnuawatu mooting, and will be improved by the race there. Charnii.'Ja. the holder of tho six furlong record —Innn. 11 l-sscc., has run her last race. Next season she will go to the Mtud. King Chiara has been running very consistently this season under big weights, hut injudicious riding lias cost the son of Soult—Chiara a couple of races.

There have been few more consistent performers seen out this season than Chaicwana. She ran .second and first at Masterton. second and first (dead heat) at Tauhcrenikau, first and third at Trenlham, and second and first at Awapuni. Sandy Paul is to be kept at steeplechasing this season. Ho gave a finished display of jumping at Awapuni, and he can jump big country just ns proficiently. Providing he keeps sound his prospects look rosy for the forthcoming jumping campaign P, Johnson intended taking Ratana. .Sandy; Paul, King Chiara and Zion to tho Hawke’s Hay meeting, but he over-, looked tho acceptances. This was very unfortunate, for it looked any odds on some of them catching stake-money. The injury Ascalon received at Fcilding has turned out more serious than at first thought, and Ire is to he spelled for three or four months. This is bad luck for his popular owner-trainer, Mr. P. Seally, for Inc horse has shown good form this season, and was expected to get his fair share of the stake money during tho coming winter months. Ladogcuv changed hands at the conclusion of the Mahawatu meeting, and will. in future carry tlie same colours as Marimba. The useful gelding lies gone into W. Griffiths’ stables at Hastings.

Toreador has been schooled at Auckland, and tho Spalpeen gelding shaped very well. He hae been entered for jumping events at the Wanganui meeting. A number of New Zealand' horses were seen out at the City Tattersajl Cup meeting at Sydney on April 1”. Mcrrimax was well supported for the Hurdles, but he went under to BibhenJukc. Athcnic and Ton Tcro were sent out to contest the Denman Stakes. Neither was mentioned in the betting, and they both ran unplaced. Football ran in tins Novice Handicap, but could only finish seventh. Jolie Fille. First Consul, Patronymic, Toreador and Sand will make their debut over hurdles at the Wanganui meet-' ing. New Plymouth stables are well represented at tho forthcoming Wanganui meeting. Percy Johnson has King Cilia ra. Sandy Paul, Zion and- Parana engaged; Bob. Barlow lias Boldstroke and Sylvan Dale nominated ; W. Mantle has entered Patronale; and R. Johnson Ngapoto. The Auckland contingent for the Wanganui meeting will be larger this year Hum usual. Salvia, Waiorewn, Merry Boc. King Lupin, K 1 Gallo, Golden Glow, Vestal. Toreador. Black Northern. Cloudy Dawn, Gold Fran, Phosphorus, Colonel Soult, Tinopai, Jolie Fille, Gallupia and Semolina arc the northern horses engaged. The New Zealand colt Deputation was landed in Sydney this week in good condition. Ho is an inmate of F. M’Grath’s stable. New Zealand sportsmen are eagerly awaiting the meeting of Mountain Knight and Deputation, the best three-year-olds in Australia and New Zealand respectively. Sutala. which was badly injured at the Wellington summer meeting, has been taken back to Biccnrton. He has made a surprising recovery. His trainer, R. J. Mason. bol>es to have him in commission again next season.

Byron will lie ridden in the Marlborough Cup by bis old pilot, B. Decley. The Marlborough Cup is one of the fow races on tbo Dominion calendar that Decley has not ridden the winner of. It is stated that Mr. M. J. Cbaafo gave {MOO for Mummer, and the con of Gazeley—Mimic ba-s since won at Taubercnikati and Trcnibam, besides running second at the former place, so that he must bo now on the right side of tho ledger. Pavlova has rim her last race this season, and is now in winter quarters. Two other members of the Stopka family in Tango and an unnamed Rokoby filly are in the Porirna stables, and will be racing next season. It was reported that the dividend paid by Birkfnl on the second day of the Manawatn meeting was the smallest on record for the Dominion. This is not so. When Plain Bill won the Slipper Hurdles at the Wanganui Jubilee mootin'} his backers received 25 per cent, less than those of Birkfnl.

Some trainers- arc lucky in their employers. W. Gibbs is one of the number. Mr. R. W. M Fadven presenting him with £~)00 of tho prize-money won bv Spurn in the All-aged Stakes. Mr. M'Fadyon also donated £.50 to tho Sydney Hospital. As Mr. .1. Wren gave £IOOO to L. Fisher (jockey), the prize-money (£-2-J3fi) for the Doncaster Handicap to the Belgian Relief Fund, and was also liberal to his trainer, he must have distributed the greater part of £IOOO He received through Oarlin’fi success. Liberality enuld not well go further, and with few owners indeed would it have gone nearly as far.
