Captain Thomas “Wilson and Miss Agnes Wilson leave shortly on a nine months' visit to Australia. Miss Wilson has acted for some years as the secretary of the G.F.S.. and on Thursday last a very enjoyable social was held in the club room to bid her farewell, a presentation being made of a handsome travelling rug. Miss Percy-Smith has . now taken over t-ho duties of secretary • of the society. Mr. E. W. Knowles, a prominent and ; much-respected resident of Napier, died 1 at an early hour on Thursday morning. Born in England 82 years ago, Mr. , .Knowies camo out to the colonies when a‘young man, and settled in Hawke’s i 'Bay a great many years ago. After I carrying on a large dry goods business in Napier with considerable success, he acquired an interest in the local evening paper, the Daily Telegraphy and eventually became its sole proprietor. A few years ago he sold the paper to a company. Mr. Knowles took a keen interest in all movements for the advancement of Napier and surrounding clistricts. He was at various times a 'member of local bodies, and was chairman of the Napier Gas Company and other joint stock concerns'. For some time h© was chairman of the New Zealand Press Association. He has left a widow and a daughter, the latter being the wife of Mr. J. A. Macfarlauo, of Ben. Lomond Station, near Hastings. A Perth cable states that the Premier, the, Hon. J. Scaddan, is recovering fr.om an attack of pneumonia.
