IN THE DOMINION

STATEMENT BY THE GOVERNOR. A WORD ABOUT FALSE RUMOURSPER PRESS ASSOCIATION. AUCKLAND, May 1. Responding to a toast at a civic dinlier, the Governor said they were all anxious to know details' of the doings of those near and dear to them. He regretted he had no other news than that already given to the press. _ News could not be given out'' until the manoeuvres and strategy of the Allies’ troops were completed. If anything of importance occurred he believed lie would be the first person in the Dominion to know the particulars. “ -When such news arrived, whether received by himself or through the Army Council to the Minister of Defence, it would be given out at the first opportunity. ' He strongly deprecated the 'spreading of rumours as to casualties, in the expeditionary force, and he earnestly trusted the losses were not severe. He thought' the sooner scandal mongers' got their dues the better it would be. It was particularly unfoidnnate that extremely wet weather prevailed on Thursday last for the "Soldiers’ Day” at Ilruti, but nevertheless the proceedings went off with a very successful swing and a substantial amount was realised for the Red Cross funds. Today the sum of £6l os was paid into the Victoria League to be forwarded to the proper authorities, and with one or two accounts still to come in it is expected that this amount will be made up to £62—a verv fine result on which the district is to be congratulated.
