THE WHITE CUFFS TUNNEL.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir.—l understand that a strong deputation is being organised to wait on the Clifton County Council to have this place put in proper order, as the stand taken up by the council is untenable, and, in ni.v'opinion, very unfortunate, considering the issue at stake. This road saves eight miles of road upkeep, and if ihe council drives the 18,000 to 20.000 head of stock that use this load on to the Mount Messenger track it will take ail the rates collected the Alokau Hiding to keep that road o”pon. If the council thinks that the Awakiuo settlors are the ones chiefly benefited they would have a good case to ask the Awakiuo Council for a grant towards the cost of upkeep. Considering that such an effort is being made to start freezing in this province, every inducement should bo given and every obstacle removed that would in any way obstruct the free access of stock to this district. Goodness only knows the Alokau River is block enough, without driving the stock over the. mountain, with eight miles further to go. and owners of stock are more likely to send their cattle, to Te Kuiti or Auckland than this way. In conclusion, I should like to suggest to the New Plymouth Chamber of Commerce to look into this matter and hcln to right a wrong. —I am, etc., PROGRESS.
