VERY HEAVY FIGHTING. ON THE CARPATHIAN HEIGHTS. PETROGRAD, April 27. Official.—The desperate battle in the direction of Sbry continues. Our fleet bombarded the. The Daily Chronicle correspondent at Lemberg states that amid the snowcrowned peaks in the heart of the-<Car-pathians is Rill 902, thirty miles south of Stry, dominating a river with a railroad and a .high road running through a winding gorge. Hill 992 has been the scene. of the fiercest mountain fighting of the war. It has earned the title of ■‘Golgotha.” The Germans alone lost 20,000 since the Anstro-Gcrmans attempted to dislodge the Russians 1 . The Austro-Germans captured Hill 992 on April 9, but the Russians still hold the village of Kozlova, and the gateway of the plains is firmly and securely held. The Russians could retake Hill 992, hut it would not be worth the cost of a frontal attack in view of the Russians’ general position in the district. VIENNA, April 27. An official message claims that the ’Austro-Germans captured a height south-east of Koziova, capturing 1000 'prisoners. The enemy repeatedly counter-attacked Koziova and the adjoining districts. All the attacks were repulsed with heavy losses. Two battalions were annihilated and several further hundreds made prisoners. IVe occupied many Russian trenches.
