ALLIES SECURING THE ADVANTAGE

WARM PRAISE FOR CANADIAN GALLANTRY. •While the Allies were massing forces and artillery for an advance in the spring the Germans .were not ' idle, and the fighting now proceeding is the result of their determination to take the offensive. It seems probable that the British capture oi Hill 60 slightly interfered with the completion of the German plans, hut the general idea is the old one of turning the .'illios left though, owing to British command of the sea, the actual attack is at some distance from (he coast. The Germans succeeded in crossing the Yser Canal, which was behind the Allies’ lines, but appear to have been compelled to retreat to the other side, as the Allies have recaptured Lizerne and Het Sas. The Allies are now taking the offensive, hut it is doubtful whether they have yet recovered their old positions. Though the Germans were strongly reinforced there is no reference to overwhelming masses of men, though the artillery is very strong. In these circumstances we may fairly hope that the Allies will he able to push on and convert the German attack into a retreat. From other parts of tha war theatre there is little to renort. The American story that a German squadron is going to make a raid on Ganada is manifestly absurd. Foi Geimanr to divide its fleet so that Britain could deal with each half separately would be madness, quite apart from the uselessness of a bombardment of Canadian ports.
