The North Canterbury Hospital Board received an intimation to-day that Miss Jans Chalmers, of 'Ashburton, had donated £'SOOO towards a ward for incurable cases at Christchurch Hospital. It is understood that the gift will carry a subsidy of 24s in the pound.—Press Association. As a number of business people are in doubt as to the position of hairdressers and tobacconists in the-event of Saturday being carried at the poll this week, our reporter called on Mr. Arnold, Inspector of Factories, who states that in the case of any shop wherein is exclusively carried on thf business of a hairdresser, a tobacconist a butcher, a pork butcher, or a photographer, the occupier may, in the event of Saturday being carried, close his shop on some other day, as ho thinks fit. provided that he gives inotice- to the j.ahour Department that he intends to do so.
