THE SHORTAGE OF SHIPPING. PER PRESS ASSOCIATION. ‘ WELMXCTON, April 26. The Prime Minister stated this afternoon that in order to see if something could be done to riJiiovo the position of the Canterbury meat producers through the shortage of shipping space, ho had cabled to the Board of Traded London, asking that body if it could secure any ships with, insulated space to send them out immediately in ballast. This, of course, would mean a lapse of at least six weeks before vessels could bo available hero, but tho Premier thought it possible in the circumstances that Southland producers might forego some of their space allotment in order to help the Canterbury men out of their plight, tie had telegraphed to , tho Southland meat producers accordingly, but it is understood the latter’s reply was not favourable, as they cottld not see their way at present to accede to the request.
