CARNIVAL NOTES.

POSITION TO-DAY. Tlic position of candidates at noon to-dav was:— Miss Hawke - 1 Miss Hilbert 2 Miss Harrison 3 Miss APGmre 4 Aiiss liennett ” Aiiss Henrichs 6 Alias Bishop -i 7 Miss Popplew’cll 8 Tbo Band Carnival at the Theatre Royal was again well attended on Wednesday evening, and the various stallholders vV. appeared to bo doing good business. Professor Cardston and his Arcadian Revels wont through another long programme of dances, etc., all of which wore greatly enjoyed, judging by tbo hearty applause which greeted each successive item. To-night Professor Cardston and Miss Veta Gilbert will perform the weird and wonderful “Apache Danco,” possibly the finest of the many items to bo submitted. “An Indian Lament,” Miss Eileen Al’Guiro in the principal role, will alto bo given. The East End Committee are working enthusiastically in tho interests of Aiiss Honrichs, and last night they paraded tho streets of Filzroy in fancy costume, and those in charge of tho collection boxes report excellent results. Tonight tho committee will hold a dance in the pavilion. A programme has been drawn up, ana at intervals between the dances songs will he rendered hv Messrs. Nippert Bros, and J. Lovell. A large crowd is anticipated. Mr. Gerald Van Hock’s orchestra will give a concert to-night in support of tho candidature of Miss Hawko. Tho orchestra will piny many operatic gems, and Captain A. C. C. Stevens, of tho Wellington Savage Club, society entertainer, and Mr, David Ingram, tho well-known Auckland tonor, will contribute. Mist! Hawke is the sports candidate, and as there is sure to be a bumper house she should materially benefit. On Monday night the Now Plymouth Swimming Club will hold a swimming carnival, tho proceeds of w’hich will bo devoted to Aiiss Hawdco’s candidature. Last night a euchre party and dance was given by the Eranklcy Road people to wtsist tbo candidature of Aiiss A. Hawke. There was an attendance of over 100, and tho function was successful and enjoyable. Tho prizes were won by Aiiss .ioltnson and Mr. APATInm. 'Hie candidature of Miss Veta Gilbert is being well supported, and her rendering at tbo Empire Theatre last night of a popular number from one of tho Operatic Society’s recent productions won her no unstinted favour with a largo audience. She will appear at this theatre again on Friday night. Tho Royal Pierrots will visit Inglewood on Monday evening next on her behalf. The * supporters of “the country girl,” Aiiss Hilda Bishop, are particularly enthusiastic, and have arranged functions all round the district in her interests. It ia probable there will bo several gift auctions at tho Waiwakaiho salcyards to-morrow, and arrangements are Veil forward lor a big sports meeting to ho held at 801 l Block, and at which the Regimental Band will bo in attendance. Tho committees working in the interests of Miss Glory Harrison, tho band’s nominee ;■ Aiiss AX'Gniro, tho nominee of Professor Cardston’s pupils J Miss E. Bennett, the friendly societies’ favourite, and Miss Popplewell, the candidate of the Afotnroa Seaside Committee, are all ivorUing with equal enthusiasm, and are disposing of hundreds of votes. The Royal Riorotto Troupo for Aiiss Vela Gilbert’s candidature have arranged to appear at Inglewood Town Hall on Monday night, Omata Hall on Tuesday night, and Waitara on Wednesday night. The art union in furtherance of Aiiss Vela Gilbert’s candidature is going along satisfactorily. The collodion of pictures is really very fine, tboro are seven prizes, and all arc oil paintings by well-known artists. Tbo social and dance at the East .End Pavilion to-night in aid of tho candidature of Alias Aladgc Honrichs for the position of Carnival Queen promises to be most successful. Tbo music will lie provided Ivy Aliases Brower and Alanand tbo supper by tbo ladies of tho committee. The vocal items will be by leading local talent. Tbo floor lias received special attention and will bo in splendid order for dancing. Tho charges for admission are light.
