Rear-Admiral Sir Reginald Custanco states that tjie armour of a Dreadnought can easily bo perforated by primary guns at lighting ranges, while it is thicker than necessary to exclude projectiles of secondary guns. If the armour could be reduced without impairing- the fighting efficiency, a great saving would Be possible, but the naval authorities of tho various Powers naturally shrank from an initial step involving such great responsibility.
