STRATFORD.

FROM OUR RESIDENT AGENT. Sept. 15.—At the annual meeting of the Jersey Breeders’ Association on Saturday, it was decided to donate a two-guinea trophy for tho best yearling heifer at tho forthcoming A. and P. Show. Tho motion was not carried without somo little d emur > as local members of the association nro contributing pretty liberally in one way or another. However, there is money in Jersevs and, as one member remarked, the public has to be impressed with tho fact. Mr. J. T. Belcher is tho incoming chairman of the local branch. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to tho outgoing chairman, Mr. J. D. Healy. There was a very large gathering at tho Roman Catholic Church on Sunday morning when Archbishop O’Shea, who is on his first visit to Stratford, held a confirmation service. At the evening service tho Archbishop voiced the disapproval of the church of tho Bible-in-Scbools propaganda and urged his people to join the Catholic Federation. the main object of which is to resist what tho Archbishop called, with more than a touch of hyperbole, a recrudescence of religious persecution. The Domain Board indulged in a division at its meeting last Friday and the event is of such rarity as to demand recording. .There is a reserve of an acre or so. close to tho centre of tho town, which is not exactly a beauty spot, having been used as a botel-pnd-dook for somo years. Tho fence is an offence to tho aesthetic eye and the logs and stumps have only their antiquity to recommend them. Per contra, the board draw's a revenue of £5 a year from tho land, a matter of mo/icnt to a very impecunious body. Tho rasher spirits on the board were for giving up the revenue and making an ornamental retreat of tho place, but £ s. d. prevailed. The via media will, however, be taken and whilst the revenue will be retained there will be a mitigation of the ugly features of the landscape.
