TRAIN HELD UP.

ON BROKEN HILL LIND. MONEY CARRIED OFF. BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH. —COPYRIGHT. SYDNEY, Sept. 15. A daring crime was committed at Broken Hill on Sunday night. Two masked and armed men held up the Broken Hill to Adelaide express, between Sulphide Street Station and Bail” way Town Station and got away with two cash boxes containing between £IOO and £l5O in notes, gold and silver. Iho distance between the platforms is only a mile. 'i'he hold-up was cleverly planned. The Silverton Tramway Company is accustomed to send large amounts from Sulphide Street to Railway Town on Sunday nights. Tho company controls the Hue from the Broken Hill station to the border. Ticket-clerk M'Guire the cash boxes in the guard's van. M’GTure, the guard Finlayson, and tho assistant guard Lowes remained in the van. Tho express departed at 8.30 and had gone two chains when the two masked men jumped aboard, crawled along the footboard to tho van, smashed the windows with an iron bnr, presented revolvers and yelled “Hands up.” One of the desperadoes remarked to the other, ‘‘Keep them covered while I get in. If you have anv roc from them, shoot. He scrambled in and hurled tho cash boxes out of tho window and got out. Then tho pair jumped of! tho tram, which was going slowly, picked up the boxes, and rushed through an adjacent wood-yard. A Indy passenger saw them disappear in tho darkness. All this happened almost in town. A porter saw the robbers leave and jumped off and pursued them fruitlessly. The police immediately scoured the district but unsuccessfully. POLICE AT A LOSS.
