FALSE PRETENCES.

MAN CHARGED IN AUCKLAND. PER PRESS ASSOCIATION. AUCKLAND, Sept. 14. A respccta'bly-dressed man, ■ named Henry Willoughby Joyce, aged 48, came before Mr. F. V. Frazer, S.M., yesterday morning; charged that ho obtained half-a-crown by. means of falsa pretences, and was remanded. Chief-detec-tive M‘Mahon • remarked that other charges, were ,pending. The allegation from the police side is that Joyce illegally joined in'the V.W.G.A. fund, collection campaign. Joyce approached the committee and expressed a desire to be put on the list of collectors, but the request was declined, on the grounds that he was, not personally known to the committee. He was subsequently seen, to be engaged in what looked suspiciously like the work of collecting. .Consequently Detective Scott arrested him. He had in his possession a book which was not an official 'collection book, indicating that he had received for the Y.W.C.A. an amount of £4, in sums ranging from 6s down to 2s. He stated that it was his intention to hand the money oyer to the proper quarters, but the cash on him at the time amounted to only 4s 9d.
