AN IMPROVED BOAT DAVIT.

Shipowners and others can hardly fail to be interested in the Graham patent improved “single” boat davit, which has been invented to provide a safe and expeditious method of lifting and lowering lifeboats, declares a shijrping contemporary. With the “single” davit tho lifeboat is suspended centrally, thus ensuring raising and lowering on an even keel, while the new form of disengaging hook automatically unships the sling whenever tho boat touches the water. The operating gear is all mounted on a self-contained derrick, specially constructed of steel lattice structure to handle lifeboats of any size, with chain or wire rope gun tackle purchase in place of three-folds manila, actuated through efficient gearing by a pair of crank-handles. The davit' is self-swinging, no guys being necessary; it locks itself in outboard and inboard positions, and only two men are required to work it instead' of twelve with the double davits, the time taken for launching being half a minute. One of the most important advantages of the arrangement is tho safety self-sustaining brake fitted to tho gear, which automatically holds the load whenever the men cease heaving. The following tests, which have been mado recently by Board of Trade surveyors, indicate how easily and promptly'the Graham davit can ho operated; A 26H. lifeboat, loaded with sufficient ballast do represent a crew of six men and gear, was lifted from the chocks by one man and turned out by three nion in 30 seconds; it was lowered into the water, a distance of 14ft.. by one man, in a further 15 seconds, the whole operation only taking 45 seconds. The boat was then lowered, with a full complement of 32 men, by one man. On another occasion the beat was lowered and the empty block hove up, a distance of 30ft., 'ready for the next boat, in 30 seconds. The hook disengaged automatically in all trials immediately tho boat was water-borne. Tho Maheno, Navna, Niagara, Willochra. Maunganni. Ulimnroa and 11.M.5. New Zealand will be within wireless range of Auckland to-night. The Wanganui, Ulimaroa, Mahcno, Willochra. Maunganui, Niagara, and H.M.S. New Zealand will be within range of Wellington.
