URUTI.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) June 23. —AA’e had a visit from tbs Hon. Mr. Rhodes and Air. C. K. AA’dson a week ago. I heard that they went up the Uruti Rond some distance. It is to bo sincerely hoped that they will have been, of some assistance to the settlors in that locality,_ for it is about time they finished talking metal, and put some of the shell rock on tho roads. Air. Wilson, a few days later, visited Peliu and met a deputation of s .'.tiers, who waited upon him re tho urgent need of tho Ta-ugitu deviation. The present track ic a piece of road that crosses the centre of a tremendous cliff, and is only about four feet wide in many places, and it. is marvellous that nobody has been killed, foi. there is a sheer drop of many chains into tho gullies below? This-piece of road is most discreditable to any Government. By deviation- a good level road, can bo made., besides also making the distance to Pehu one and a-balf miles shorter. Since writing my last notes there has been a telephone lino ’ erected into Ngatramiro (Aloki), which will be a groat boon to residents there. The settlers residing between, the Uruti township and the Aloki hate good cause to complain at the action of the Govvrnment in carting all the bridge timber over the road in tho middle .of winter. If some of the officiate were dumped down into the back-blocks for a winter or two it would go a long way towards helping to educate them as to the urgent need of carting bridge timber during the summer months. There was a dance in the hall in aid of funds for the nurse’s home last Thursday night, when there was a fair attendance.

On Saturday night a meeting of all interested re the rormation of a tennis club was held in the hail, when there was a largo attendance. After a good deal of discussion it was decided to form a club and also put down an asphalt court. Air, E. Burkett’s billiard-room is completed, and it is the owner’s intention of opening it this week. . Our schoolmistress, Miss Mount, xis leaving for a mouth’s holiday owing to sickness, and wo hope to see her come back again in tbo very best of health. A relieving teacher is going to take charge of the school.
