MATAU.

(From a correspondent.) June 24.—1 tis a Ion" timo since “Your own correspondent’’ wrote you news from Matau. Things hero have taken a lively turn of late. The ©lection of the School Committee caused great excitement as it was rumoured that ladies were going, to be candidates. Tho settlers turned up in great force. I hoard of onq hau who had not time to have his tea for fear of being late. The election was gone on with after" the arrival of our bush lawyer who come to see that tho election was carried out in proper form/ Four ladies and four gentlemen were duly nominated and to the surprise and disappointment of some of the candidates, the four ladies were at the top of tho poll. A lady was afterwards elected to the chair. I suppose Mr. Editor this is a record for tho Dominion. On May 28.—Our bachelors gave a ball, which was a great success. The hall was nicely decorated and tho settlers attended in large numbers. Mr. A. Smith and Mr. W. Rawlinson were M.O.’s, and great credit is due to them for the maimer in which they carried out th'eir duties. Tho music supplied by Mr. Nolan was all that could be desired. Tho supper, such as our bachelors know how to provide, was voted first-class. Dancing was kept up until morning, when every one went home after having a real good time. May 30.—There was a farewell social to Mr. and Mrs. AVoolfsbaur and family who are leaving tho district. A large crowd gathered and a very pleasant evening was spent, songs, dancing, etc., boing the order of the night. After an excellent supper the presentations were made. Mrs. Woofsbaur was the recipient of a good useful travelling bag, Mr. AVoolfsbaur a case of pipes, and Miss Ivy AVoolfsbaur a very nice • handbag. Mr. and Mrs. AVoolfsbaur are taking up their abode near Palmerston North, and we wish them success in their new home. ■ Jime 20.—A euchre party and dance in aid of tho school funds was well attended and I hear they are to be more of them during the winter months. Theer is to be a waltzing competition shortly, the result of which I will let you know off “Your own correspondent” _ does not come to light in tho meantime.
