' A New York message reports the death of Brigadier-General Snyder. A Sydney, cablegram reports the death of Mrs. Adams, widow of Mr. George Adams, of sweepstake fame. ' Professor Mills who will address a meeting in the Borough Council Chambers this evening, is in town to-day. ■ - The Rev. J. B. Brooklehurst, who has been spending a holiday in New Plymouth, left this morning for Hastings. The Rev. A. H. Colvilo deft this morning for Rotorua on his annual holiday. Mrs. and- Miss Colvile accompanied him, - ; Mr. D. A. Strachan, M.A., at present Inspector of Schools in the Marlborough district, was on Tuesday appointed Assistant-Jnspector under the Hawke’s Bay Education Board. 1 Staff nurses Misses Lea, Affleck, Young, and Wallace have been recommended by the medical superintendent of the hospital for promotion to tho rank of sisters. Mr. C. A. Wilkinson, M.P., has been elected unopposed as the representative of the grouped boroughs of Eltham, Stratford and Inglewood on the New Plymouth Harbour Board. Mr. F. P. Corkill has been appointed to act on behalf of tho Taranaki County Council as a member of tho Assessment Court in connection with the revision of the valuation rolls for Omata Riding and the outlying districts of Mangorei and Waitara. A letter was received in Palmerston North on Saturday last from Sir William Hall-Jones, late High Commissioner for New London, in which the writer says he is leaving London for New Zealand on the 20th of next month. Sir William says ho will be glad to get back to the more free and wholesome life of the colonies, although Lady Hall-Jones’ and his own stay in London has been made very enjoyable. By the death of Mr. Thomas M'Guinness there is removed a man who m hui time was prominently identified with this settlement. In his youth he served in the Royal Artillery, and m the early fifties he came tc New Plymouth _ and for several years was warder or orderly at the old Colonial Hospital at Te Henui under Dr. Peter Wilson. During tho Maori wars he served in the Taranaki Rifle Volunteer Corps, in which he held an ensign’s commission, and in the Militia, in which he held the rank of lieutenant. He was 85 years of age. The resignation of Dr. Shand, professor of natural philosophy at the Otago University, was received at yesterday’s meeting of the University Council, the resignation to date from March 31, 1.914. Reference was made by several members to the splendid work Dr. Shand has performed in the University since his appointment in 3870. A motion of appreciation of Dr. Shand’s valuable services will be proposed at a subsequent meeting. Intimation of the resignation will be forwarded to the Otago Presbyterian Church Board of Property, with whom the appointment of a new professor lies, subject to the concurrence of the Presbyterian Synod of Otago, and Southland,
