In giving evidence this morning during the hearing of an assessment case in. the court, the borough valuator (Mr. C. T. Mills) stated that he had been about four months engaged on the task of assessing the values of 4000 sections. This counsel for an objector worked out at 30 a day. Mr. Mills said he had worked on Sundays, high days and holidays over the job. The doom of the lamp-post is sealed so far as the main streets of London proper are concerned. After some years of experiments the City Fathers have decided to light the principal traffic arteries in the domain on the centrallyhung principle, with 2000 and 3000 candle-power lamps suspended at short intervals above the middle of the roadway. London is not the pioneer of this method of lighting, for it has already been adopted in several Continental cities, and in New Plymouth. But — better late than never—it should prove a vast improvement on the system at present obtaining, for in London’s narrow streets lamp-posts undoubtedly are an obstruction, and the abolition of the dark shadows cast by their ironwork when the lamps are lit will certainly make for the safe.ty of street travel afoot or awheel at night. It will, of course, be a considerable time before the lamp posts’ entire abolition becomes an accomplished fact within the city limits, but when the whole scheme is completed Londoners will be able to boast that theirs is one of the bestlighted cities in the world. And their satisfaction will not bo the less because, whilst the new scheme provides for increased illumination amounting to 600,000 candle-power, it will mean a saving of nearly 30 per cent. -on the annual lighting bill.
