AUSTRALASIAN CHAMPIONSHIP. Per Press Association GORE, March 22. The Combined New Zealand avid Australasian Draughts Championship Tournament, held under the auspices of the Gore Draughts Club, was, opened at two o’clock to-day by -Ur. G. Anderson, M.P. There are six entries for the championship tournament. The handicap tournament is also being held under the New Zealand championship rules. GORE, March 22. The draughts tourney was continued last night. At the end of the evening's play the scores were—lirodie 21, Lucas 21, Gardiner 11, Caldcnvood 2j, Hillikcr 3, Morris 1. NORTH ISLAND CHAMPIONSHIP. The North Island Championship and Handicap Draughts Tournament opened in the Now Plymouth Municipal Buiklings on Friday afternoon. Visiting competitors who arrived by Thursday's mail train were weloomed at the station by the Mayor (Mr. G. W. Browne), and subsequently a meeting of players was held, at which rules were adopted, and tho following hours of play agreed upon: Afternoon, 2 till 5; evening, 7 till 10.

There are fourteen competitors, and it is probable many more would have attended but for the fact that the fixture clashed with the New Zealand tournament. This is the local child's first venture with a tournament. Play will bo continued this afternoon and probably brought to a close on Monday. The handicaps are sealed. Mr. «J. Bruce is acting as secretary and Mr. AV. Nichols as referee.
